Alusteel Leads Sustainable Development with LEED-Certified International College in Beirut

At Alusteel, our commitment to sustainability is foundational to our operations across the board. While quality, excellence and innovation lie at the core of the Alusteel promise, we also understand the crucial importance of applying eco-friendly practices within the construction sector. Working according to such practices not only showcases our responsibility to the community and environment but also acts as an additional compliance measure. In fact, ensuring that we adhere to the highest standards of energy efficiency and environmental responsibility has led to many of our projects achieving a prestigious LEED certification.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a globally recognised certification system that sets the standard for environmentally responsible building practices. It evaluates every aspect of construction, from energy efficiency and water usage to indoor environmental quality and material selection, awarding certifications that validate a building’s sustainable attributes. Projects with LEED certification have met some of the highest standards for sustainability and demonstrate a commitment to reducing carbon footprints, enhancing energy savings and promoting renewable, clean energy.

Innovative Design Meets Sustainability

A prime example of our sustainability practices playing a key role in the LEED certification of projects within the Alusteel portfolio is exemplified in The International College (Phase II) project, which was completed and handed over in 2018. Located in the heart of Beirut, Lebanon, this independent international school hosts 2,400 students on 10-acres. With Alusteel onboard, the campus was expanded through the design of a new Ras Beirut Elementary School building, as well as the International College (Phase II) facility.

The new combined facility for the preschool and middle school on the IC campus is the first LEED building in Lebanon, certified as LEED Gold. The plan arranges three buildings around outdoor courtyards. The buildings are connected at the lower level and feature rooftop playgrounds.

A beacon of sustainability and architectural excellence, the building envelope design incorporates a series of cutting-edge sustainable technologies, energy-efficient systems and sustainable building materials. Alusteel used varied fenestration and glazed curtain wall cladding to harmonise with Beirut’s urban landscape. This further emphasises our pioneering leadership in eco-friendly construction solutions, which blend sustainability with regional aesthetics.

The state-of-the-art new preschool and middle school facility encompass 16,000 square meters and features a series of roof terraces that double up as green space and play space with a courtyard in the middle. The design integrates two classroom buildings, connected by an underground extensive parking system and a cultural centre with music rooms and a library above ground.

A unique aspect of the preschool and middle school facility is its integration with the natural landscape, particularly the preservation of a 400-year-old Carob tree around which the new school is built. Moreover, a range of sustainable design features are integrated into the development, which paved the way to earning a LEED Gold rating.

A Leader in Green Building

The International College project exemplifies our highly skilled team’s expertise and collective commitment to advancing sustainable construction globally. Through projects like these, Alusteel not only demonstrates its engineering and architectural prowess but also its role as a frontrunner in the push towards sustainable development. The company strategy includes rigorous adherence to LEED, showcasing an in-depth understanding of these global standards, as well as the importance of environmental stewardship and cutting-edge building practices on an international scale.

While our dedication to sustainable building is evident in every project we undertake, the pursuit of prestigious LEED standards further inspires us to innovate and implement solutions that meet these strict standards. Our approach is aimed at minimising environmental impact while maximising value for our clients and stakeholders, proving that responsible practices and business excellence can go hand in hand.

As Alusteel continues to expand its portfolio of LEED certified projects, we remain dedicated to crafting spaces that are not only innovative and functional but also sustainable and environmentally responsible. These efforts ensure that our projects set new benchmarks for sustainability in the industry, while benefitting current populations and promising healthier urban environments and a greener future for generations to come.
